How To Prepare Your Kids For Your Photo Session

With little ones, how they behave at your family session can be a bit unpredictable. Here are my tips for making sure your session goes as smooth as possible!

Planning

When planning their outfit(s), make sure that they will be fully comfortable to run and play. With kids, comfort comes before cuteness when it comes to clothing choices for your session (although there are plenty of comfy cute kids clothes out there!) We don't want any clothing items that are itchy or uncomfortable. Also, their outfits should have some layers in case they need to cool down or warm up.

Before

The day before or the morning of, remind them that they get to be a model and get their photos taken! Make it sound like a fun experience ('cause it will be!!) Maybe show them a picture of me and tell them my name, so when the session comes I might not feel like a complete stranger to them.

Getting ready

When you're getting your kids ready, double check that what they're wearing is comfortable for them.

Make sure their belly is full and/or bring some snacks with you so they don't get hangry. Bring a water bottle or juice.

At the session

It's okay if your little ones need a few minutes to warm up to me, to them I'm a stranger!

I try to get the smiling & posing for the camera photos out of the way at first so you can just be together and play with your family while I snap some shots — these tend to create some of the best photos from my sessions. Play with them and make it fun! I will also be giving you some fun prompts to bring smiles out of your kids.

If they're just not having it, it's okay

Like us adults, kids have their bad days too. If your child just isn't having it that day and is crying or throwing a tantrum, tend to their needs. Sometimes kids just need comfort and understanding when they're upset, and honestly, it can lead to some very sweet pictures of you and your child in that moment.

If they just need a break to cry, eat a snack, drink some water, or all of the above, that's okay! Just let me know.

Bonus Tip: Give them a prize!

My biggest tip for a smooth session with your kids is to get a prize to give them afterwards! Are you bribing your kids for good behaviour? Absolutely — but it usually works for getting pictures 😂

Seriously, there have been so many times when a child isn't super interested in getting photos taken or wanting to smile, but as soon as a prize is mentioned, they light up and smile big!
